“I was facing life and I beat the odds, I just came back they like ‘shawty you hard’” – Free the Goat ft. Shad Da God

History repeats itself. As overused as the phrase may be, it is the best way to describe the deja vu you feel when an artist takes you back to that one time and place. This mixtape took me back to the summer of 2017. Gunna had just dropped Drip Season 2. At the beginning of the summer, I just knew Gunna as someone that Thug was putting on. By the end of the summer, his voice rang from every 12-inch subwoofer in Atlanta.

Before I heard Gotti Outta Here, I looked at Yak Gotti the same way, just one of Thug’s guys. Yet, his debut project, littered with new wave production and YSL lingo, emphatically earned some ears and some respect.

“And my slime bought me all of this, I ain’t cap bout sh*t” – Lemonade ft. Lil Duke

Even if you’d never heard of Yak Gotti, you would be able to connect him to the Young Thug umbrella after just one listen to this project. Still, Gotti carves out his own lane by an exaggerated use of Atlanta slang, an abundance of unorthodox flows, and a refreshing resolution of honesty. This proves to be a profound combination that gives an impression of both authenticity and originality.

Occasionally, Gotti detours from the traditional trap sound, like on “Friends with Benefits,” to experiment with slower, more romantic themes. But the project more consistently gives you music to drive to or to turn you up on the weekend. Throughout the tape, Wheezy, Taurus and Turbo take turns showing off their enchanting instrumentals as they prove once and for all that YSL is the standard for elite in-house production.

“Turn it up a notch, I just did an interview with Adam22” – In the Coupe

Again, like Gunna in 2017, Yak Gotti has yet to flash on the radar of the mainstream. It’s clear, however, that he won’t be satisfied with being another face in the YSL crew. It’s also clear that he won’t likely ever be the face of the YSL crew. Instead, he’s simply making the case that he can carry his own weight by delivering on a solid project with infinite replay value. Gotti Outta Here.
